Bags were getting heavy as students took part in the annual Back to School Supply Giveaway hosted by Harrah’s Metropolis on Thursday, Aug. 4. Dependent on the grade, 350 students received bags, pocket folders, pencil cases, looseleaf paper, spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers, rulers, glue, highlighters, Sharpies and tissues. Along with providing information on being drug free, members of the Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition made backpack tags featuring either a local school mascot or a message. Southern Seven Head Start and Rural Health Inc. provided a variety of goodies. Assisting Harrah’s Metropolis employees in handing out supplies were representatives of Edward Jones Tim Milano office, Massac Memorial Hospital, Metropolis Rotary Club, Massac Unit 1, Honeywell and the City of Metropolis. Dental Safari Company, a mobile dentistry company specializing in children of all ages, birth to 18-years old, remained busy during the event providing 30 students dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants as needed. Participants also had the opportunity to sign up for a $250 school supply shopping spree sponsored by City National Bank. The drawing was held the following day with Robert Bridgewater being the winner. Other event sponsors included Reed Electric, Farmer & Co., Legence Bank, Banterra, Loftus-McManus Funeral Homes, Liberty Utilities, Banterra and Thrive. Leftover school supplies will be evenly dispersed between Massac Unit 1 and Joppa-Maple Grove school districts. “It can be costly to prepare a child for school, especially during these challenging times. This is why it’s important to do whatever we can to help youth in our community have the tools they need to be successful in the classroom,” said Chad Lewis, advertising and public relations supervisor for Harrah’s Metropolis.
